Chapter 60: The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches of the Advanced Learning

The ancient Chinese people focused on reading the Four Books and Five Classics. What are the Four Books?

The Analects of Confucius, Mencius, University, Doctrine of the Mean, What are the Five Classics, Zhou Yi, Shangshu, Book of Songs, Book of Rites, Spring and Autumn, and the source of the true traditional Chinese culture is the Zhou Yi, also called the Book of Changes. Therefore, the learned ancients not only understand Tai Chi, Yin and Yang, Five Elements, and Eight Trigrams, but also know the heavenly stems and earthly branches, know how to observe the celestial phenomena at night, and know the affairs of the world. After counting on my fingers, everything is in my palm. This awesome and this cultivation level, how can future generations look back on it? It is like a candlelight to the bright moon, a small river to the sea, what we call a little scientific knowledge, and the mathematics, physics and chemical knowledge obtained by rote memorization, is like a piece of shit in front of the ancients. Sorry, I said it a little smelly, and it should be worse than even dog shit!

What are the five elements?

Gold, wood, water, fire, earth, and the five elements do not refer specifically to five specific substances. The so-called gold is not gold, and water does not refer specifically to the water in rivers and lakes. The five elements represent five different types and characteristics in the universe. Gold represents certain solid, solidified, and sharp substances. Wood represents a certain growth function, like trees, flowers and plants. Water represents a certain flowing, circulating, and nourishing substance. Fire represents a certain heat energy and a certain passionate attribute. Earth represents the earth itself and is our mother!

The profoundness of all things is that they are not absolutely unchanging, but will change each other. For example, gold will be dug out from the soil (of course, copper, iron, tin, etc., such substances with hard properties can be called gold). Water plants or trees will grow in the water. Therefore, the mutual generation and mutual restraint of all things is its mysterious point. The law of mutual generation and mutual restraint of all things is like this. Wood produces fire, fire produces earth, earth produces metal, metal produces water, and water produces wood!

Wood overcomes earth, earth overcomes water, water overcomes fire, fire overcomes metal, and metal overcomes wood!

One thing produces one thing, and one thing subdues another thing, and it has its own reasons!

The five elements also have directions: Eastern wood, Western metal, Northern water, Southern fire, and Central earth!

This direction is very knowledgeable and reasonable. In ancient times, we did not have such advanced detection instruments for mining. We rely on the principles of the Bagua and Five Elements to detect the direction of minerals. For example, Western gold, the more gold it is, the more gold it is hidden in Tibet, the more wood it is, the more fire it is in the south, the climate is hot, the northern water it is water and snow it is the most. Therefore, the wisdom of the ancient Chinese people is really amazing. They can summarize the profound knowledge and finally summarize it into a very simple sentence, or a few symbols. All the rules are in these sentences or these symbols. What awesome wisdom this is!

In addition to the five elements, there are also heavenly stems and heavenly stems. From a literal perspective, you can tell that it is related to heaven. What is in heaven?

The entire universe, all kinds of stars, our solar system, twenty-eight constellations, moon, and all things have the function of radiation. Planets will interact and influence each other due to gravity. Naturally, these planets outside our earth will definitely have an impact on our earth. When we ancient people looked at the celestial phenomena at night, they discovered the law of the movement of this celestial body, and used the symbols of ten characteristic characters to represent A, Yi, B, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui!

These ten symbols are the so-called heavenly stems. The heavenly stems are divided into yin and yang: Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren is the Yang stem, Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui is the Yin stem. These ten heavenly stems must be matched with the twelve earthly branches to be considered complete. These twelve earthly branches are Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai!

When we find a fortune teller, the fortune teller will calculate your future based on these heavenly stems and earthly branches. The twelve earthly branches represent the twelve hours, because the heavenly stems and earthly branches represent the position of the planets on the celestial body at a certain moment. The birth date in rural areas is marked by the twelve earthly branches. For example, this person was born at 7:00 pm on the eighth day of the seventh lunar month, so his birth time corresponds to the Chou among the twelve earthly branches. In other words, this person’s birth date is born at the Chou on the eighth day of the seventh lunar month!

Therefore, this divination and fortune-telling is also called astrology, and has a very profound scientific basis. Perhaps our wisdom is too shallow to understand the mystery. But no matter what, a knowledge that has existed in China for tens of thousands of years is worthy of our awe!
